To give a voice. I’m writing more. DEMAND a full investigation. But if you’re accustomed to working in a Markdown editor and switching frequently from editing to preview mode, you might prefer Obsidian. As someone who knows essentially nothing about CSS, this was initially very daunting. This is something that is incredibly handy, especially when writing long-form articles in Obsidian. Block references cannot pull in adjacent nested text automatically, since Obsidian doesn’t operate on a block-level structure. Your second brain should work the same. I don’t think I’ll ever learn to use every function available to me … but I don’t have to. The application is not actually your notes itself, just a tool to help you process them. Opening multiple notes is more flexible and usable. But your local hard drive could also suffer catastrophic failure. This is not necessarily a reason to leave Roam, as with their current ARR and recent funding valuation they are likely to be around for a long time, but certainly something to be aware of when using the application. These are essentially pages that serve only as a dumping ground for references from other pages via backlinks. There is also full support for tagging with autocompletion. Roam Is a Note-Taking Tool, and a Dream of a Better Self. Each of these tags is also clickable from this panel, which then automatically pulls up a search for all the notes with that tag. Unfortunately, this interaction is limited to creating new or editing existing notes. What is Roam Research? But you can modify the structure of the panes however you like. Both Roam and Obsidian present a map or graph of pages and their links, displaying a these ideas in a constellation of relationships. Once, I used to write entire books in Word. Both problems can be mitigated by responsible practices. To avoid the trap of paralysis by analysis, I gave myself two weeks to find a solution. Based on a lively discussion in a user forum, Obsidian’s commitment to working with unmodified Markdown documents greatly complicates efforts to add block referencing to the app. I began to experience this constant presence in the back of my mind anytime I wrote something — would I be okay if this somehow became public? In meetings, I’m more focused. You would have to convert “genius” into a link and then convert all the unlinked mentions into links as well. Roam Research, by default, offers a simple, uncluttered presentation of content. One advantage with Roam is that you can open the url inside of DT and create notes from there. More concerning, however, is what happens on re-importing your dataset, for instance in the case of data loss. Finally, I’d like to be able to share individual pages (or a collection of pages) from a knowledge graph with the public (and perhaps even invite participation in creating and updating those pages) without having to share the entire graph. (Since I tend to travel with an iPad exclusively, this is a problem for me.). For another thing, Roam’s development is a bit haphazard. Coming from Roam and other note-taking applications like Notion or Evernote, I was used to a what-you-see-is-what-you-get (WYSIWYG) writing experience. This is admittedly not as strong as the contextual backlinks seen in Roam (see the next section for more details), but is a very nice adaptation for a markdown-based application. Two of my favorite plug-ins for Obsidian are note outlines and the tag panel. You can also choose whether you want the graph to include or suppress nodes associated with daily pages. Panes in Obsidian can be split infinitely and resized, and they make cross-referencing multiple notes a breeze. But that would be missing the true purpose of this tool. Nowadays, I spend around 90+% of my time in Obsidian in Edit mode. By contrast, after installation, Obsidian’s basic feature set requires no internet connectivity at all. Since content is stored locally, it’s always available — provided you have a Mac, Windows, or Linux laptop capable of accessing those files. Roam’s $15.00 per month subscription raises eyebrows, but I’m in the camp that believes sustainable pricing is vital to the long-term viability of any product or service. I live in a rural area, so I occasionally wander into regions without cellular data coverage. Even if the page has not yet been created, you can still link to it from other pages using regular wiki-links and autocompletion. During downtime, I’m more present. Even then, it would not be exactly the same. Often spoke about in the same line as Roam Research, Obsidian refers to themselves as a note-taking platform with “links as a first-class citizen”. You don’t even need an Obsidian account to use the application! Roam gives you the sidebar to open pages alongside the one you're working on. Graph functionality is second to none and blows Roam out of the water. This will need a Special Counsel. They have also delivered every time on promises made for Obsidian’s future and even on parts previously thought not possible (e.g. I’m a writer, author, and media producer, so as I discover applications and process of special interest along these lines, I’ll share what I learn. Let me start by saying, I think Roam is amazing. This added a subconscious level of friction to my writing. Honestly, RemNote is one of the most promising note taking apps I have seen, especially with the amount of updates and support its getting recently. A tabbed left-hand pane can display either a list of folders and documents or the search field. They are also very active in the Obsidian community, frequently responding to posts in the forum or on the public Discord personally with long, detailed replies. For one thing, it is expensive. The best part is that all of these shortcuts are entirely, 100% customizable, meaning you can change them to suit your own personal workflow and style. If you’re obsessed with privacy, Obsidian might be the better choice for you. Of course, these are just my personal opinions and are unlikely to be reflective of everyone in the community. They have the strengths and weaknesses of their approaches. The same query in Obsidian could look like this: Other than the easier to use syntax, I also find Boolean search more powerful than queries since you are not limited to searching for previously defined links. Obsidian is great if you have large screens and atomic short notes. I will be the first to admit I was never too concerned with data privacy when working with Roam — at least when I first started using the application. Oddly, neither Roam nor Obsidian offer a search feature that works in graph view. For me, though, the fact Roam opens to my daily page — versus forcing me to click a link to create one — reduces friction and makes the daily page habit more addictive.). I had free access. The application is beautiful, allows for incredibly individual customization/flexibility and is fluid and frictionless to use. You create these connections in two ways. You can reference by wiki-linking to a page and then typing ^ to pull up a list of all the searchable blocks from that page. I think the pricing differences between Roam and Obsidian speak for themselves, so I won’t belabor this point. In a very short time, I’m already seeing ways Roam can assist with writing everything from blog posts to video scripts. Very easy to use and link notes. You end up relying on the longevity of the note-taking application, itself, instead of the longevity of your own thoughts. This is the power of local-first storage. (Double-click to jump to the related page.) A major difference between Obsidian and other applications like Roam, Evernote or Notion is that Obsidian is just a shell application. The design and layout seems to have some influence from their previous experience. “cmd-w” to exit/close out of the currently selected note, “cmd-shift-d” to jump to or create the Daily Note for the day, “cmd-shift-r/l” to open/close the right and left navigation panels, “cmd-forward/backward” to jump to end of lines and exit out of markdown/brackets, “option-forward/backward” to skip between words in a line, “cmd-up/down” to jump to start or end of a page, “cmd-shift-forward/backward” to jump forward and backward between notes, The lack of distinction between pages and hashtags. Obsidian’s notes are as secure as your local computer is — at least until you sync them using a cloud service. I’m now around 2–3 months into using Obsidian and over that time, it has slowly become my daily driver for note-taking, knowledge management and writing. Obsidian is a powerhouse note-taking and knowledge work application at a ridiculous price point (free). It’s not just my notes repository. There need to be consequences for everyone who was part of this. Bottom line? This means you do not have to worry about losing your data unless you delete it. As a result, blocks cannot be referenced or embedded. The lack of a base block-level, outliner structure is the main differentiator and may be a limiting factor, especially for those currently entrenched in the Roam ecosystem. On migrating to another platform, those “reference pages” will be blank. Blocks can contain links to other pages, but also to other blocks. Roam can use this block nesting to generate relationships between thoughts and a contextual framework for ideas. Not only is Obsidian beautifully designed, structurally-sound and premium-appearing, it’s also just a joy to work in. The human brain is non-linear: we jump from idea to idea, all the time. That said: be aware that Roam does offer a scholarship program, providing discounts or free service to full-time researchers, people under twenty-two, or those “experiencing significant financial distress.”. Still, the issue has been vocalized enough by the user-base to discuss it here. While this may or may not be the case, I get the impression Obsidian has been developed with an eye toward cloning Roam’s feature set in a free, open-source application. I was using Roam for the outliner functionality, block level referencing and frictionless linking and writing experience. Obsidian works with separate markdown document files sitting on your own hard drive. In lieu of categories and folders, both Roam and Obsidian represent notes as nodes on a graph. Beyond these differences in syntax and flexibility, the other main important difference between queries in Roam and Boolean search in Obsidian is at what level the searches are functioning. Occasionally, Roam simply will not load in the Safari browser. The application is web-only (outside of local storage in browser cache for 5-year subscribers) and has a minimalist appearance. The only true way to get around this is with local-first file storage, like Obsidian, or with true data-privacy based encryption, like E2E. Your hard-earned knowledge and writing is future-proofed. Roam is pretty rough and even despite CSS - ugly. I’ve been on a quest for a personal “thought processor” — one place to put all my notes, journal entries, and research. As I see it, this is where Roam and Obsidian stand at the current point in time. But I’m not just producing more text; I’m producing better structured, more thoughtful text … and sharing it more frequently with others. You could even use something like Boxcryptor to encrypt the files in your Dropbox account for added security. These things really didn’t bother me over the short term for several reasons: But over time, these issues did begin to wear on me. Each of these windows can display multiple views of the same document, multiple different documents, or any combination of these. The page will also still appear in your graph view and search, even when not clicked yet. With Roam, it’s quick and easy to export your notes to a local folder. As for block references, exporting your vault will retain the referenced text on the page, but no link or notation displaying the source will come with it. The Note Outline plug-in creates a side-panel that shows a structured, hierarchical outline of the note you are working in based on the headings included on the page. It’s not a true offline application. When you open Roam, it greets you with a blank daily notes page. Back on my original “Snowpiercer” note, in addition to the impressions I recorded, I’ll see two automatically generated lists. Nodes can also be clicked and dragged, stretching the web of ideas in interesting ways and making connections easier to explore. The main hindrance? I would be amiss, however, not to thank Anne-Laurie Le Cunff (A Beginner’s Guide to Roam Research), Shu Omi (How to Take Smart Notes | Zettelkasten Method in Roam Research) Nat Eliason (Roam: Why I Love it and How I Use It), and Anonym-s (for the video series From Beginner to Superuser). With Obsidian, you could save notes to a cloud-synced folder. As I mentioned at the start of this post, no tool is perfect. In Roam, I would open my graph from time to time to admire how my database was growing. This automatic creation of backlinks is a game-changer, making it easy to form and navigate connections between notes with minimal effort. What the founders are doing with block-level text manipulation has turned it into a ground-breaking tool for writing and knowledge-work. I’ll disclose more about my process later; for now, I’ll just say that combining Roam’s insights with Ulysses’s text management system has launched a new phase in my life as a writer. This third-party editing strategy can be perilous. Obsidian is developing so quickly that at the initial time of outlining this article, block references did not exist in the application at all. No dedicated apps exist (yet), so you access Roam Research through a browser. The main one being that Obsidian now has the ability to “query” at the page level, but also link at the block level, which provides a substantial amount of added flexibility to the system (see Boolean Search section below for benefits of page-level querying). Obsidian: Obsidian is a markdown editor. In any case, after a few weeks, I stumbled upon Obsidian. With Roam, it’s quick and easy to export your notes to a local folder. It is a note-taking tool for networked thought As easy to use as a document. First: fuzzy searches. There are a few main differences and subtle limitations in Obsidian to be aware of though: All this being said, there are some benefits over Roam’s system as well. Help is spread out amongst an online forum, YouTube videos, Twitter, a Slack channel and a multitude of community-run websites and pricey online tutorial courses. Since I had an account prior to the release of their subscription model, I was grandfathered in, so to speak. In Roam, text is presented as a series of bulleted paragraphs or blocks. They are looking into alternatives, though there is limited information about the status of this, the timing of implementation or even if it will be possible. The Tag plug-in creates a side panel that shows all of the tags you are currently using in your Obsidian Vault and the number of times each tag has been referenced. This allows you more flexibility in how you break ideas down and mix and match thoughts. Disambiguate Obsidian vs Roam. How does Obsidian (launched 2019) compare to Roam (launched 2019) over 200 features? Boolean search takes advantage of easy to understand syntax: As a brief example, here’s what a query looks like in Roam and what the same Boolean search would look like in Obsidian. (I’m just starting to understand how I might use queries, for example.) This is a fairly new tool, so we’ll keep you posted on this! These CSS “hacks” and many others are readily available on the Obsidian forum for viewing and use: You can also easily modify the CSS of the base theme or any community theme yourself to get Obsidian to look how you want. Obsidian is a fairly new competitor to Roam Research, with its offline, markdown based application designed to link up your notes - designed and built by the team at Dynalist. Once the API goes public, community generated plug-ins are likely to rapidly expand the offerings of Obsidian functionality. This provides additional context between pages, but also allows for impressive, block-level filtering capabilities. Queries are nice, but have strengths and weakness. On the opposite end, being able to query at the page level also has its benefits, particularly for general knowledge work. Block references allow you to embed content from one page into another, but at the atomic level of a single block (or in the case of Obsidian, at the level of a single paragraph). We get asked about the best roam alternative (roam research alternative), but that's a hard question to answer because people use it for different reasons. If you’re a budget-conscious person, Obsidian.md might be the better choice. In a sense, I was censoring myself a little bit every time I wrote. The last subtle trick of Obsidian is being able to move any panel and pin them to different places in each of the side bars. The result is a kind of enhanced awareness that extends my thinking in broad and unexpected ways. In Obsidian, I can query any combination of page links, hashtags and random words or phrases. In Obsidian, this is no problem and is highly effective. That alone was worth any other issues with the application (even the potential risk of data loss and lack of local storage). This may not be a huge priority for most people, but Obsidian is beautiful. Obsidian’s graph looks more fragile and spindly, but the animation associated with dragging nodes or zooming in and out is smoother and, to me, more satisfying. Just open the help menu, click the themes link and with a simple click you can apply or preview any of the available themes. Because there is no proprietary formatting, you can open and access your notes in any other text editor or note-taking application available. In Obsidian, you can search your graph to narrow down the view to specific pages or tags, view orphan nodes or adjust the link distance between pages displayed, among many other features. As always, storing sensitive data in the cloud gives me pause. The linkages in Roam encourage me to see this material in surprising contexts. When this is the case, I either switch to Chrome or close and restart Safari, which seems to help. Once notes go in, the system should help me link my ideas together, spark insights, and produce something new. These are the same complex searches you can run on your Vault, which you can also run from within graph view to help narrow down the nodes you are seeing at any given time. Page titles, however, are rendered in a tiny, fine text that can be difficult to read, especially in dark mode. When I first pasted a link to a tweet into Obsidian, it appeared as a link, rendered in tiny grey text. Be aware, too, that both Roam and Obsidian are being developed at a furious pace. Definitely have to applaud Roam for putting this into play. Roam is an outliner with a central database. Links go to pages, not to specific blocks within a page. Obsidian.md is free for personal use. I have never been one to store personal or protected information in note-taking applications and so why should I care too much about a web-based platform versus local-only storage? Tags can be used to provide an additional level of structure or denote certain types of pages, whereas links typically serve as the primary method of connecting pages together. As noted above, WYSIWYG is coming to Obsidian in the near future and when that occurs, there will no longer be any need to cycle between viewing/editing modes at all and this whole section (other than the keyboard shortcuts portion) will be a moot point. The most important reason people chose Evernote is: I mostly didn’t care about any of the new additions. In this sense, Roam is more opinionated than Obsidian. For me, this proved irritating, as I often clicked and clicked and clicked a on document in preview mode before remembering to switch to edit mode. I can drag and drop these, re-ordering them at will. There is also a CSS block that allows you to access “Andy Mode,” which allows for scrollable panels of notes based on Andy Matuschak’s online note system (see: https://notes.andymatuschak.org/About_these_notes). From then on, in other notes, I can surround any instance of the word “Snowpiercer” in double square brackets, like this: [[Snowpiercer]]. These blocks can then be nested indefinitely underneath each other and they can be collapsed or zoomed into/out of. This can, however, be individually modified in Obsidian manually, Block references in Obsidian cannot be created using “alt-drag,” something that I do miss a lot from Roam, Block references can only be viewed in Preview mode at the moment (this will change once WYSIWYG is added to Obsidian), Unlike Roam, there is no number next to the original text to show how many times the text has been referenced and where each of those references are located. I think no one would argue that the Obsidian graph view is far superior to Roam’s graphing at this point in time. Do they have the same detailed functionality of Roam? After fourteen days of googling, reading blog posts, listening to podcasts, and putting various candidates through their paces, I found only two options I felt could meet my needs: Roam Research and Obsidian.md.
